The reference watch
Cartier introduced the Tortue case in 1912. The shape is a rounded tortoise, and the lugs curve into the case without a break. The Tortue Monopoussoir adds one function: a chronograph with a single push-piece. That button sits on the crown at 3 o'clock. Start, stop, and reset all run through it.
Cartier built the Monopoussoir inside the Collection Privee Cartier Paris line. Production ran in small batches. Steel and gold examples appear at auction. Total counts are not published. Cartier showed a new Tortue Monopoussoir in the Prive line in 2024. Production numbers for that release are not public.

What counterfeit copies change
Sellers list copies under search terms like "tortue mono." Listing photos are often a stock image of a genuine watch. Delivery photos are often the same image reused across shops.
- Case: copy cases measure 1 mm to 2 mm wider than the genuine profile. The lug curve is flatter.
- Push-piece: most copies use a standard crown plus a second button. The genuine watch has one integrated button.
- Movement: quartz in the cheapest tier. Chinese mechanical chronograph movements in the mid tier. Neither carries a Cartier caliber number.
- Crystal: mineral glass on cheap copies. Sapphire with an anti-reflective coating on the genuine watch.
- Caseback: laser-printed text on copies. Engraved serials on genuine watches.
Legal status in the United States
Counterfeit watches are illegal to import. U.S. Customs and Border Protection can seize shipments at the port. The personal-use exemption does not cover goods with a counterfeit mark. 18 U.S.C. 2320 covers trafficking in counterfeit goods. A first offense carries up to 10 years in prison and a fine up to $2,000,000. Buyers lose the watch and the payment. Sellers face criminal charges and civil suits from the trademark owner.
Checks before money moves
- Ask for a photo of the caseback with the serial. Engraving shows depth. Printing does not.
- Ask for a photo of the movement with the caseback open.
- Count the buttons. One button means monopoussoir. Two buttons mean a different watch or a copy.
- Request a video with a handwritten date and the watch in frame.
- Compare the price to auction results for genuine steel Monopoussoir examples. A price under $10,000 USD is a signal, not a bargain.
