The pick
Pre-owned genuine Cartier comes first. A 1980s Must de Cartier Tank in gold-plated silver sells for $1,200 to $2,500. A counterfeit Tank sells for $80 to $300. The copy loses the full purchase price. The pre-owned watch keeps most of its value and can be repaired.
Fake Cartier Jewelry and Watches: How to Spot Counterfeits
Why the copy loses
A fake carries a forged trademark. In the United States that is trademark infringement under 15 U.S.C. 1114. U.S. Customs and Border Protection can seize the shipment. The buyer gets no warranty, no parts supply, and no legal resale channel. Gold plating on a fake bracelet runs 1 to 3 microns. It wears through at the clasp in 12 to 24 months.
Option 1: Pre-owned genuine Cartier
Steel Tank Francaise quartz runs $2,000 to $3,000. Vintage Must de Cartier runs $1,200 to $2,500. Budget $300 to $500 for a service. Cartier repairs its own models through its service network. Most independent watchmakers refuse to touch a counterfeit.

Option 2: New steel Cartier
Cartier sells steel versions of the Tank Must and the Santos-Dumont. The steel Tank Must quartz lists near $3,000. That is more than 10 times the price of a copy, and it includes box, papers, and warranty.
Option 3: Rectangular dress watches from other brands
Rectangular cases exist outside Cartier. Longines DolceVita in steel with quartz movement: $1,300 to $1,800. Frederique Constant Classic Carree: $700 to $900. Seiko and Bulova sell rectangular dress models under $400. None of these carries a Cartier mark.
Option 4: Jewelry with stated gold content
A Cartier Love bracelet in 18k gold lists above $6,000. A faithful copy sells for $30 to $150 and is brass with plating. Real alternatives: a solid 14k bangle from a local jeweler, priced by gram weight and gold spot; gold vermeil, which the FTC defines as sterling silver with 2.5 microns of gold; and gold-filled stock, where the gold layer is 1/20 of total weight.
