A pre-owned Cartier is counterfeit when the case serial, the reference number, and the movement do not match each other. Cartier does not issue written authentication letters to buyers. The practical test is a service estimate from Cartier, which requires a genuine watch for parts and warranty work.
Check the caseback and serial number
Cartier engraves a serial number on the caseback. Model lines from the 1970s onward carry one. Newer pieces also carry a reference number, such as W69012Z4 for a Santos or W6701010 for a Ronde Solo. The engraving sits in a straight line. Letters have even depth. Fakes show shallow marks, uneven spacing, or a serial that returns no record at Cartier.
Match the serial to the reference. A Ballon Bleu caseback with a Tank reference is a fake.
Check the metal stamp
Gold Cartier watches carry a hallmark: 750 for 18k, plus a Swiss assay mark. Steel models read Stainless Steel. Fakes often skip the hallmark or stamp 18K in a font that differs from the dial font. Gold plating on a fake wears at the lugs and crown after 12 to 24 months of daily wear.
Check the dial, hands, and crown
- Dial text: "Cartier" and "Swiss Made" sit at set positions. Fakes place "Swiss Made" too low or use a serif font.
- Cabochon: the crown holds a blue spinel or sapphire. Fakes use glass or resin. The stone on a fake shows bubbles under light.
- Hands: blued steel hands on a Tank or Santos have a matte finish. Fakes use painted metal that reads glossy.
- Date window: the aperture edges are cut, not punched. A ragged edge points to a fake.
Check the movement
Cartier uses ETA and Sellita base movements in many models and the in-house 1847 MC in others. Quartz models exist in the Tank and Must lines. A genuine quartz Cartier ticks once per second. Fakes often run a low-grade quartz module with a sweeping seconds hand, or a rotor that does not match the caseback text.
Check the box, papers, and price
Pre-owned Cartier sells with a box, a warranty card, and service records in most cases. Missing papers alone do not prove a fake. A price 50% or more below the market range for that reference is the clearest warning sign. Counterfeiters target the Tank, Santos, and Ballon Bleu because demand is high.
Verification steps
- Ask for the serial and reference number before payment.
- Ask the seller for a photo of the caseback at high resolution.
- Call a Cartier boutique or an authorized service center with the serial.
- Buy through a platform with an authentication program.
- Pay for an independent appraisal if the seller refuses a return.
Cartier service can refuse work on a counterfeit and return the watch unrepaired. That refusal is the answer.
