A fake Lange dress watch is a counterfeit copy of an A. Lange & Söhne model, most often the Saxonia, the 1815, or the Richard Lange. The watches are made in China. Retail runs $200 to $900. A genuine Saxonia costs $20,000 and up.

Which models get copied

Counterfeiters target the simple three-hand dress pieces. The Saxonia Thin and the Saxonia 37mm get copied most. The 1815 and the Richard Lange appear less. Grand complications and the Lange 1 with its off-center dial are rare as fakes because the layout is hard to reproduce.

Volume: why Lange fakes are fewer than Rolex fakes

A. Lange & Söhne makes about 5,000 watches a year in Glashütte, Germany. Rolex output is cited near one million. Copy shops follow volume. A Lange replica has a small buyer pool and a high tooling cost for the movement. Most factories skip the model.

Price bands and what each buys

  • Under $150: quartz movement, printed dial, gold-plated case, mineral glass.
  • $200 to $450: modified Seagull or ETA clone, sapphire glass, 316L steel case.
  • $500 to $900: decorated movement, engraved balance cock, closer case bevels.

No band reaches the finish of the original. The gap narrows at the top and does not close.

Movement tells

Genuine Lange movements use a German silver three-quarter plate with Glashütte ribbing, a hand-engraved balance cock, screwed gold chatons, and heat-blued screws. Replicas stamp or print the ribbing. The balance cock engraving is machine-cut or missing. The chatons are gold-colored rings, not gold.

Check the winding. A genuine Lange hand-wound movement advances with light, even resistance. Replicas feel loose or gritty. Look at the ratchet wheel: the real part carries a sunburst finish and sharp engraving.

Dial and case tells

The outsize date is the fastest check. Lange builds it with two separate discs. Replicas use one disc with printed digits, or two discs that sit off-center.

Hands on genuine pieces are solid gold or rhodium-plated with hand-beveled edges. Replica hands look flat under a loupe.

Dial text matters. Genuine printing sits sharp and raised. The words "Made in Germany" appear near 6 o'clock on most references. Replica printing smears at the serifs.

Case thickness is a second check. Replica Saxonia cases run thicker than the 7.8mm to 8.2mm of the originals because the clone movement is deeper.

Serial numbers and papers

Lange engraves each movement with a serial number and keeps the record. The service department can check a serial against that record. Ask for the warranty book, the box, and the original invoice. A seller who cannot show a matching set is a risk. Serial numbers on replicas are often reused across batches.

Legal status in the US

Trafficking in counterfeit goods is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. § 2320. A first offense carries up to 10 years in prison. Sellers also face civil suits under the Lanham Act, 15 U.S.C. § 1114. US Customs and Border Protection seizes counterfeit shipments at ports of entry. A single imported watch can be held and destroyed.

Checklist before you pay

  1. Ask for a movement photo with the caseback off. Compare the plate shape to an official image.
  2. Check the balance cock for hand engraving. Look for a floral pattern, not a stamped grid.
  3. Measure case thickness with calipers.
  4. Confirm two separate date discs on any outsize date model.
  5. Run the serial through the maker's service department before money changes hands.
  6. Get the price in writing. A genuine Saxonia at $3,000 does not exist.
