The short answer

A fake Patek Philippe perpetual calendar is judged by one question: does the calendar actually work? The real watch tracks the date, day, month, leap year and moon phase on a mechanical program that stays correct until 2100. Most replicas copy the dial layout and stop there. If the leap year indicator moves through fewer than four positions, or the moon phase is a painted disc sitting under the dial, the watch is cosmetic rather than functional.

What copies get right and what they miss

Case shape, dial color and hand style are easy to copy and often come close. The hard parts are the calendar train, the case thickness, and the finishing on the movement. Solid gold weight, recessed corrector pushers and a moon phase disc that turns on a real gear are the details that separate a serious replica from a $60 toy. Judge those three things before you look at anything else.

Prerequisites

  • A 10x loupe
  • Digital calipers for case diameter and thickness
  • A jeweler scale that reads grams
  • The reference specification for the model being copied, including exact diameter, thickness and caliber number
  • A plastic or wooden corrector tool for the recessed pushers
  • Good light and about 30 minutes

Inspect in this order

  1. Measure the case diameter and thickness with the calipers. Compare both numbers to the reference spec. Perpetual calendar movements are thin, so a replica case often runs 1.5 to 3 mm thicker to hide a taller movement.
  2. Weigh the watch head. Solid gold references carry real mass. A 39 mm gold perpetual calendar head sits well above 60 grams, while a plated steel copy sits closer to 40 grams.
  3. Study the case profile. Genuine cases have a thin stepped bezel and a slim band. A domed or deep caseback is a sign that extra height was needed inside.
  4. Examine the dial under the loupe. Check subdial hand length, the weight of the printed text, and the moon phase window. A real moon phase shows a detailed moon on a rotating disc.
  5. Test the moon phase with the corrector tool. The disc should advance in a steady step. A disc that rotates freely or will not hold position is decorative.
  6. Test the leap year indicator. Press the month corrector four times and watch the leap year hand pass through positions 1, 2, 3 and 4 before returning. Fewer positions means the function is fake.
  7. Advance the time past midnight and watch the date flip. A working calendar changes the date over a few minutes. A cheap copy drags the date or flips it at noon.
  8. Use every recessed corrector in the case band. Day, date, month, moon phase and leap year each need a pusher that engages. If a pusher is missing or dead, the calendar cannot be set.
  9. Look at the movement through the display back. Check the depth of the Geneva stripes, the polished bevels on the bridges, the blued screws, and the caliber engraving. A solid gold rotor has a soft matte tone, while a plated brass rotor looks flat and bright.
  10. Compare the caseback engraving and hallmarks to the reference. Font, depth and spacing are consistent on the real watch and sloppy on most copies.

Red flags that end the inspection

  • Moon phase that is a printed sticker or flat paint
  • Leap year hand with three positions, or one that moves only when the month is set
  • Correctors that spin without engaging anything
  • Case thickness outside the reference spec by more than half a millimeter
  • Movement with flat polishing and no bevels on the bridge edges
  • Rotor that sounds thin and bright when tapped
  • Subdial hands that jump out of alignment when the calendar changes

Legal and practical notes

In the United States, trafficking in counterfeit goods is illegal, and shipments can be seized at import. Patek Philippe will not service a counterfeit, and no authorized repair center will touch one. Resale is close to impossible because no serious buyer accepts the watch without papers. If you need certainty, a trained watchmaker with the movement in hand is the only reliable check.
