Short answer
A fake Rolex Day-Date is a watch built to copy the Rolex Day-Date. It carries Rolex names and logos. Rolex does not make it and does not authorize it. Prices run from about $80 for a brass case with gold plating to $1,500 for a steel or tungsten case with a cloned movement. The genuine Day-Date comes in 18k gold or 950 platinum. Retail starts above $35,000.
What the genuine watch is
Rolex released the Day-Date in 1956. It was the first wristwatch to show the day of the week spelled out in full. The day sits in an arc at 12 o'clock. The date sits at 3 o'clock under a Cyclops lens with 2.5x magnification. Current sizes are 36 mm and 40 mm. A 41 mm Day-Date II ran from 2008 to 2015. Case, bezel, and bracelet are solid gold or platinum. Water resistance is 100 m. The President bracelet uses semi-circular three-piece links and a concealed Crownclasp.
Where copies differ
- Metal: brass with plating, 316L steel, or tungsten alloy. No solid gold.
- Weight: a plated brass case weighs far less than a gold case of the same size.
- Day disc: English in most copies. Genuine discs come in 26 languages.
- Day font: wide spacing and thin strokes on many copies. Genuine type is compact.
- Cyclops: lower magnification and an off-center date on low tiers.
- Caseback: some copies ship with a display back. No Rolex Day-Date has one.
Price tiers
Tier 1, $80 to $150: plated brass case, mineral glass, quartz or low-grade automatic, printed dial. Tier 2, $250 to $600: 316L steel or tungsten, sapphire glass, Asian 2836-2 with a day and date module, applied markers. Tier 3, $700 to $1,500: steel or tungsten case with ion-plated gold color, cloned 3255 movement, tighter bracelet tolerances.
Movements inside copies
Most mid-tier copies use an Asian 2836-2 with a day and date module. It beats at 28,800 vph and holds about 38 hours of power reserve. Top tiers use a Chinese clone of the Rolex 3255, sold as SH3255 or VR3255. These run at 28,800 vph with a stated reserve near 70 hours. Copies do not use the Chronergy escapement or the paramagnetic hairspring of the real calibre. Rate after regulation lands near plus or minus 10 to 20 seconds a day.
Spot checks
- Weigh the watch. A gold Day-Date 36 weighs far more than a plated copy.
- Look for hallmarks: 750, 18K, or PT950 on the case and clasp.
- Check the day change. It should flip with the date near midnight.
- Test the crown. Genuine crowns have defined positions and smooth winding.
Legal status in the US
Import of goods with a counterfeit mark is banned under 19 U.S.C. section 1526. CBP can seize and destroy shipments. Trafficking in counterfeit goods is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. section 2320, with up to 10 years in prison for a first offense. Rolex records its trademarks with CBP, which lets customs block shipments that carry the marks.
Limits of this guide
Batch quality changes without notice. Two watches from the same seller can differ in dial print and bracelet fit. Copies carry no serial registry and no service network. Resale value sits near zero. Treat any spec sheet from a seller as a claim, not a fact.
