What reference 326939 is

Rolex launched the Sky-Dweller in 2012. Reference 326939 is the Everose gold model: a 42 mm Oyster case in 18k rose gold, an annual calendar, a second time zone, and the Ring Command bezel. Calibre 9001 drives it, with a 72-hour power reserve and 100 m water resistance. The caseback is solid, so the movement stays hidden. The annual calendar needs one correction each year, at the end of February. Twelve apertures sit next to the hour markers; the current month shows in a second colour. A 24-hour disc shows home time, and the crown sets local time in one-hour jumps.

The Ring Command bezel is the core of the design. It turns to defined positions and changes what the crown controls: winding, then date and month, then local time. A fake version of 326939 exists mainly because of that case shape and dial layout.

What replicas copy

Counterfeit Sky-Dwellers come from workshops in Guangdong province, China. They copy the outside: 42 mm case, fluted bezel, dial print, bracelet shape, rose-gold colour. Grades range from quartz movements to automatic clones, and the finish tracks the price. None of them use 18k Everose gold. Cases and bracelets are steel with rose-gold plating or PVD coating. Plating wears at the clasp, crown and bracelet edges. An X-ray fluorescence test separates plating from solid alloy.

Where replicas differ

  • Bezel function. A genuine Ring Command bezel has three positions with firm detents and changes the crown's job. On replicas the bezel turns freely or does nothing.
  • Calendar. Rolex calls its annual calendar mechanism Saros. It advances the date and the month disc together. Replicas use a date wheel plus a decorative month ring, and the month often fails to follow the date.
  • Movement. Replicas run third-party automatic or quartz movements. The solid caseback hides the difference from the outside.
  • Mass. Solid 18k gold carries more weight than plated steel of the same size. A scale shows the gap.
  • Details. Case thickness, lug shape, bracelet end-link fit, dial font, and the colour of the red month aperture all drift from the original.

Legal status in the US

Counterfeit watches are illegal to import and to sell in the United States. Trafficking in counterfeit goods falls under 18 U.S.C. 2320, and trademark owners can sue under the Lanham Act. US Customs and Border Protection seizes counterfeit shipments at ports of entry, and a single-item order is not exempt. Rolex service centres refuse to work on counterfeits, so a replica has no service path and no resale value.

Checks before calling a watch a 326939

  1. Read the reference number between the lugs at 12 o'clock and the serial at 6 o'clock.
  2. Turn the bezel. Count the positions and listen for crisp detents.
  3. Set the date across a month end and watch the month aperture move with it.
  4. Look for the laser-etched coronet in the crystal at 6 o'clock under a loupe.
  5. Have a watchmaker open the case and test the gold content.

A replica can look close in a photo. It does not pass the bezel test, the calendar test or the gold test.
