Knockoff IW323762: Short Answer
IW323762 does not match a reference block that IWC lists in public catalogs. A watch sold under that number is either a replica of an IWC Ingenieur or a replica with a made-up reference. Ask for a caseback photo and a movement photo before you send money. A listing without those two photos is unverified text.
What the Reference Number Means
IWC uses the letters IW plus six digits. Each model line takes a block of numbers. The 2013 Ingenieur Automatic 40 used the IW3239xx block. The 2023 Ingenieur Automatic 40 uses the IW3289xx block. IW323762 sits outside both blocks. That fact alone does not prove a watch is fake. It does mean the number carries no catalog weight until a caseback confirms it.
Replica Tiers
IWC replicas are less common than Rolex replicas. Fewer workshops build them, and the Ingenieur sells in lower numbers than the Submariner. Stock moves in three bands.
Counterfeit IW323762: How to Spot a Fake IWC Watch
- $50 to $150: quartz or low-grade automatic movement, mineral glass, plated case, printed dial. Case weight runs below a steel case of the same diameter.
- $200 to $450: Seagull or Miyota automatic, sapphire crystal, 316L steel case, applied markers, stamped clasp.
- $500 to $900: decorated clone of calibre 30110 or 32111, 904L or 316L steel, anti-reflective coating on the crystal, engraved rotor and caseback. This tier comes closest to the genuine watch. IWC will not service it.
Movement Facts
IWC Ingenieur Automatic references from 2013 used calibre 30110, an ETA 2892 base with 42 hours of power reserve. The 2023 Ingenieur Automatic 40 uses calibre 32111 with 120 hours of power reserve. A listing that advertises a Swiss ETA movement at $200 does not match parts cost. A new ETA 2892 sells for hundreds of dollars on the parts market.
Checks Before Payment
- Caseback photo with reference number and serial.
- Movement photo, rotor side and crown side.
- Scale photo. Compare the grams to a steel case of the same diameter.
- Bracelet photo at the clasp. Look at screw heads and end link fit.
- Payment method. Credit cards and escrow give a dispute path. Bank transfer and crypto do not.
- Return address and return window in writing.
Legal Facts for US Buyers
US law bans the import and sale of counterfeit goods. 18 U.S.C. 2320 covers trafficking in counterfeit goods and carries prison terms. Customs and Border Protection inspects parcels and seizes counterfeit watches. A seized parcel means the money is gone and no refund is due. Reported outcomes for personal-use orders are seizure of the parcel and a notice from CBP. Sellers face criminal charges.
What the Number Cannot Tell You
A reference number is text in a listing. It does not confirm the factory, the movement, the steel grade, or the serial. Photos and a receipt do. If a seller will not send a caseback photo and a movement photo, end the conversation.
