Quick answer

A replica Audemars Piguet Royal Oak 15500 is a counterfeit copy of the 41 mm steel Royal Oak that AP released in 2019. Listings run from about $80 to $900. None of them use an Audemars Piguet calibre 4302. All of them carry AP trademarks without a license, and importing or reselling one in the US is illegal.

What the genuine 15500 is

  • 41 mm stainless steel case, 10.4 mm thick
  • Calibre 4302, automatic, 4 Hz, 70-hour power reserve
  • Integrated bracelet, Grande Tapisserie dial, no cyclops
  • Retail price in the US sat near $26,000 to $30,000 depending on the year

The 15500 replaced the 15400. It also dropped the applied AP monogram at 12 o'clock and uses a printed Audemars Piguet wordmark instead. Compare any dial photo against AP's own product images before you judge a copy.

What the replica market sells

Three price bands exist.

  • Under $150: quartz or low-grade automatic movements, printed dial texture, case 11 mm to 12 mm thick, folded or loose bracelet.
  • $250 to $500: Miyota 9015 based movements, closer dial pattern, better case edges, thickness still off.
  • $550 to $900: so-called super clones with movement plates decorated to look like a 4302, claims of 904L steel, closer bracelet taper.

"1:1" and "Swiss made" appear in listings. Neither term has a standard or an enforcement body.

Common tells

  1. Thickness. Genuine is 10.4 mm. Most copies measure 0.5 mm to 1.5 mm thicker.
  2. Movement. Ask for a movement photo. The real 4302 has a free-sprung balance and 70 hours of reserve. Copies use third-party movements with glued or screwed decorative plates.
  3. Dial and date. Tapisserie squares, date font, date wheel print, and hand bevels are hand-finished on the real watch and stamped on copies.
  4. Bracelet. Check link screws, taper, and how the end links meet the case.
  5. Caseback. Engraving depth and the rotor finish differ.

US legal status

Counterfeit watches infringe registered trademarks under the Lanham Act, 15 U.S.C. § 1114. Trafficking in counterfeit goods is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. § 2320, with up to 10 years imprisonment for a first offense. US Customs and Border Protection can seize shipments at the border, including single items ordered for personal use. Resale carries the highest exposure.

Service and resale

Audemars Piguet will not service or authenticate a counterfeit. There is no warranty. Resale value is near zero, and listing one for sale on a US marketplace exposes the seller to a takedown and a claim from AP.

What is not known

No public data exists on how many 15500 copies circulate. Reported defect rates and steel grades come from seller claims, not from testing.
