Short answer
A 26mm Ballon Bleu is a small Cartier-style watch. Cartier does not list a 26mm Ballon Bleu in its current US catalog. The 26mm size shows up in replica listings. A replica copies the Cartier name, dial, and case shape without a license. In the US that copy is a counterfeit good. It can be seized at import. Selling it is a federal crime.
What the Ballon Bleu design contains
Cartier launched the Ballon Bleu de Cartier in 2007. Four details carry the design:
- A case with a domed, rounded profile
- A crown set inside a metal arch
- A blue cabochon on the crown. Cartier uses synthetic spinel.
- A guilloche dial with Roman numerals and sword-shaped hands
Cartier sells the line in case sizes from 28mm to 42mm. Steel 28mm models run on quartz calibers. Larger steel and gold models use automatic calibers.
How 26mm is measured
Case size is the diameter across the case back at the widest point. It leaves out the crown and the arch that guards it. A 26mm watch reads as a dress watch on a wrist of about 14cm to 16cm. Lug-to-lug length and case thickness decide how it sits, and most sellers do not publish those numbers. Ask for a caliper photo with the case back flat.
Movements in 26mm replicas
The 26mm case is small, so sellers fit one of three movements:
- A quartz module. Thin, cheap, and easy to fit.
- A low-grade automatic at 21,600 vibrations per hour. This adds about 2mm to 4mm of case thickness.
- A decorated automatic with a rotor engraved to mimic a Cartier caliber.
A genuine Cartier caliber number and a matching case-back reference do not appear on most replicas. If a seller shows both, treat the photo as unverified.
Price bands
Published prices for 26mm replicas run from about $40 to about $300. The band tracks the movement, the crystal, and the plating. A sapphire crystal and a steel case cost more than mineral glass and alloy. Price does not make a counterfeit good legal.
Legal status in the United States
US law treats a watch that carries a counterfeit Cartier mark as contraband.
- 18 U.S.C. 2320 makes trafficking in counterfeit goods a federal offense. Penalties reach 10 years for a first offense and 20 years for a second.
- 19 C.F.R. 133.23 lets US Customs and Border Protection seize goods that carry a counterfeit mark. The personal-use exemption covers gray-market goods, not counterfeits.
- 15 U.S.C. 1117(c) sets statutory damages at up to $200,000 per counterfeit mark per type of goods, and up to $2,000,000 if the use is willful. Cartier owner Richemont files civil suits.
Possession for personal wear carries a lower risk than resale. Import and resale are the two actions with clear exposure.
Checks that separate a replica from a genuine watch
- Case back: reference and serial numbers, font, and depth of engraving
- Cabochon: synthetic spinel against glass or plastic
- Crown arch: the metal bridge should sit flush on the case band
- Dial: guilloche lines should be cut, not printed
- Crystal: sapphire gives a sharper edge reflection than mineral glass
- Weight: a steel case weighs more than a plated alloy case
- Movement: quartz in a 26mm case is normal, but the caliber stamp on a replica often does not match Cartier records
