Short answer
A replica Breguet tourbillon minute repeater copies a high complication from Breguet's Classique line. Most watches sold under that name have a working tourbillon and a repeater that does not chime. On many examples the hammers and gongs are decoration. Ask for a video of the chime at a set time before you pay.
What the genuine watch does
Abraham-Louis Breguet patented the tourbillon in 1801. Breguet still sells minute repeater tourbillons in the Classique range. A minute repeater strikes the hours, the quarters and the minutes past the quarter on two gongs when the slider is pushed. The mechanism needs a rack, a snail cam, two hammers and two gongs. Genuine Breguet minute repeater tourbillons list above $200,000 and use movements with several hundred parts.
What the replica carries
Chinese factories build Breguet-style cases at 40mm to 42mm with sapphire crystal, a display back and a real tourbillon cage. Movement sources include Seagull ST8000 series, Hangzhou 3300 series and Dandong variants. The tourbillon rotates once per minute and is visible through the dial opening. Finishing ranges from bare bridges to hand-bevelled steel parts.
The chime problem
A working repeater adds about 40 parts and hours of assembly time. Replicas at $300 to $800 do not carry that module. Common substitutions:
- A slider that moves a lever with no gong
- One gong instead of two, so quarters do not sound
- Hammers that lift but do not strike
- A quartz or rotor-driven sound chip hidden in the case
Test method: set the hands to 3:47, push the slider, and count. A correct repeater gives 3 low strikes, 3 double strikes for the quarters and 2 single strikes for the minutes. Case depth is a second check. A real repeater needs 12mm or more of case height.
Price bands
- $300 to $700: tourbillon only, no chime
- $700 to $1,500: better finishing, same silent repeater
- $1,500 to $3,000: claimed chime, sold in small batches, video proof required
Checks before buying
- Get a timestamped video of the strike sequence
- Confirm two gongs and two hammers on the movement photo
- Confirm case thickness above 12mm
- Ask for the movement name and beat rate
- Pay by a method with a refund window
Legal and service notes
Breguet is a trademarked brand. U.S. customs can seize counterfeit goods at the border. No Breguet service center will touch a replica, and most independent watchmakers refuse repeater work on unknown movements. Resale value is near zero. This site covers Rolex replicas; Breguet replicas come from different factories and different supply chains, so a Rolex seller is not a reliable source for this model.
