Short answer

A replica IW371496 is a copy of an IWC Portugieser Chronograph. IWC groups references that start with 3714 in that line, and IW371496 is one dial and strap variant inside it. The watch is stainless steel with a two-register chronograph layout. Copies sell from about $70 to $500. IWC does not make them and does not service them.

What the reference number means

IWC builds reference numbers from a family code plus a variant code. The 3714 block is the Portugieser Chronograph. The last two digits set dial color, hand finish, strap and market. Check the exact variant against the IWC catalog page, because dial colors for 371496 are not listed together in one public table.

Published figures for the 3714 case: 40.9 mm across, 12.3 mm thick, 3 bar water resistance, sapphire crystal, strap options that include alligator leather. Watches sold from 2019 use a wider case and a different movement.

How copies are built

Most copies of this model come from workshops in Guangzhou and Shenzhen, the same supply chain that builds Rolex copies. Three parts set the grade.

  • Case. 316L steel in most builds, 904L in the top grade. 20 mm lug width. Polished bezel with brushed flanks.
  • Crystal. Sapphire. Coating on one side gives more glare than coating on both sides.
  • Movement. An Asia 7750 automatic chronograph, a Seagull ST19 hand-wind, or a quartz module. The 7750 runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour and holds about 44 hours. The 3714 case was built around a 7750 base, so a 7750 copy keeps the pusher feel and the subdial positions. The in-house 69355 in later IWC versions is thinner. Copies of that version use a 7750 and run thicker.

Details that separate a copy from the original

  • Subdial spacing. Small seconds at 6, 30-minute counter at 12. A 7750 copy matches those centers. A quartz copy does not.
  • Date window. The original sits at 3 with a framed aperture. Copies print the frame.
  • Hands. Leaf hands on the original are polished on each face. Copy edges show a blur under a loupe.
  • Case back. Deep engraving on the original. Shallow laser etching on copies.
  • Weight. Steel case on a leather strap. Copies land within a few grams when the case is 316L and the strap is leather.

Sellers' terms mean little

Terms such as 1:1, Swiss made and super clone have no standard. IWC never made a 371496 in a Chinese factory. Any dial that carries the IWC name and the Schaffhausen line is unlicensed. Buyers ask for the movement name, case diameter in millimeters, and a timegrapher photo with rate and amplitude.

Price bands

$70 to $120: quartz, mineral glass, printed markers. $150 to $250: Asia 7750, sapphire, applied markers. $300 to $500: better case finishing, double anti-reflective coating, decorated rotor. Above $500 the movement inside is the same 7750.

Import law

Counterfeit watches are illegal to import into the United States. 19 U.S.C. 1526 lets Customs and Border Protection seize and destroy them, and a buyer can face a civil penalty. Customs rules in the EU and the UK follow the same line. IWC will not service a copy or sell parts for one. Resale value is zero.
