Short answer
A replica Patek Philippe perpetual calendar is almost always a cosmetic copy. The dial shows day, date, month, moonphase, sometimes a leap year window, but the movement behind that dial is a quartz module or a modified automatic running an annual or complete calendar at best. A genuine perpetual calendar tracks 28, 29, 30 and 31 day months plus the leap year cycle on its own, and it will not need a date correction until 2100. Very few replicas can do that. The ones that come close cost several hundred dollars and up, and they still are not a Patek movement.
If the listing promises a working perpetual calendar for under $150, the calendar is decorative. That is the honest starting point.
Why this complication is hard to copy
A perpetual calendar is a mechanical program, not a display. Real ones use a 48 month cam or a stack of levers that knows which months have 30 days and which February gets a 29th day. That program sits inside a module that has to be thin enough to fit a dress case. Patek's own perpetual movements are famously slim, which is why the watches wear close to the wrist.
Copies go the other way. Adding a calendar module on top of a base automatic adds height. A replica that looks correct in a photo often measures 1 to 3 mm thicker than the real reference, and the extra depth is the tell.
What is actually inside most replicas
- Quartz dress copies. Thin, light, battery powered. The subdials are driven by a stepping motor or glued to a static plate. The moonphase rarely moves on its own.
- Automatic with a calendar module. The most common tier. A Miyota 9015, a Seagull ST21 series or a clone 2824 base with a bolted on module. It shows day, date and month. It does not know February from April.
- Annual calendar lookalikes. The module remembers 30 and 31 day months but still needs a manual push every February. Sellers call this perpetual anyway.
- True perpetual clones. Rare. A handful of factories have built or adapted a genuine perpetual module, or used a donor movement from a lesser brand. Expect high prices, limited output and no parts support.
How to test the calendar before you trust it
- Advance the date through February. A real perpetual calendar rolls from Feb 28 to Mar 1 in a non leap year, and to Feb 29 in a leap year. A module will keep counting to 29, 30, 31.
- Count the correctors. Genuine perpetual calendars use recessed pushers set into the case flank, one per function, so they can be adjusted with a pin. Cheap copies put everything on the crown and one big pusher.
- Watch the leap year indicator. Some references show it in a small aperture. On copies it is often printed and never changes, or it jumps on the wrong cycle.
- Check the moonphase. A properly geared moonphase is accurate to about a day over more than a century. A cosmetic disc drifts within weeks or sits frozen behind the date wheel.
- Look at the month hand or disc at the changeover. It should snap cleanly near midnight. Modules drag or stall halfway.
The corrector window trap
On any calendar watch, including a real Patek, you should not adjust the date while the calendar is engaged. That window runs roughly from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. Push the corrector during those hours and you can shear teeth off the module. On replicas the teeth are softer, the tolerances are looser, and the damage is permanent. A surprising number of dead replica perpetual calendars died this way in the first week.
Price tiers, roughly
- Under $120: quartz, decorative calendar, plated case, mineral glass.
- $150 to $350: automatic base with a calendar module, sapphire on the better examples, decent dial printing.
- $350 to $800: the top replica tier. Better case finishing, closer proportions, a module that at least handles 30 and 31 day months.
- Above $800: rare perpetual builds or watches sold with genuine parts mixed in. At this money you are competing with real vintage dress watches, so think hard about what you are buying.
Where they fail
- Calendar module jams, usually after a forced adjustment.
- Moonphase disc slips out of alignment and never returns.
- Gold plating wears through on the crown, lugs and caseback edges within a year of daily wear.
- Water resistance claims are meaningless. Gaskets are thin and cases are not pressure tested.
- No service path. Watchmakers will not touch a counterfeit, and parts do not exist.
QC checklist if you are looking at one
- Ask for a video of the date advancing past midnight, not a still photo.
- Ask for the case thickness with calipers. Compare it to the reference you are copying.
- Confirm the pushers work and return properly. Sticky correctors mean a bent lever.
- Check dial printing under magnification. Blurry text and misaligned subdials are common.
- Confirm the movement, not the marketing name. Factory names in this market are brands of convenience, not guarantees.
Legal reality in the US
Selling or trafficking counterfeit watches is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. 2320, and shipments are routinely seized by U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Buying one for yourself is a different risk profile than selling, but the item can still be confiscated in transit and there is no recourse. Patek Philippe also runs authentication services, and a fake will never be serviced by the brand.
None of that stops the market. It just means you should know what you are holding before you spend real money on a dial that says perpetual and a movement that does not.
