Where the movements come from

Weight, since 316L is lighter than 904L.
Price and resale
A replica has no resale market. Pawn shops and auction houses will not take it. Service is a problem. Few independent watchmakers stock parts for clone movements, and Rolex service centers will not touch the watch.
US law
Two statutes matter. 19 U.S.C. 1526 bars import of merchandise that copies a US trademark. CBP seizes and destroys the goods. 18 U.S.C. 2320 covers trafficking. A first offense carries up to 10 years in prison and a $2,000,000 fine for a person. Selling even one replica can trigger it. Personal use is not a defense at the border. The shipment is still contraband and is lost.
CBP reported 19,724 intellectual property seizures in fiscal year 2023, with a manufacturer's suggested retail value of $2.8 billion. Watches and jewelry are a small share of that total.
Scam patterns
Replica sites change domain names every few months. Common outcomes: no shipment, a cheaper watch than advertised, or card data sold to third parties. Payment by wire or crypto removes the chargeback option. Reviews on independent forums are the main check, and they go stale fast.
Homage watches
A homage copies the look without the Rolex trademark. Seiko, Steinhart, and similar brands sell dive watches in that class for $200 to $800. They carry their own name on the dial, which keeps them outside the counterfeiting statutes.
