Replica Type XXI: the short answer
A replica Type XXI copies the Breguet Type XXI ref. 3810, a 42 mm steel pilot chronograph with a flyback movement and a 24-hour subdial at 3 o'clock. Chinese factories build this model in low, mid, and top grades. Two details separate a good copy from a bad one: does the flyback work, and does the 24-hour subdial read the time of day. Most copies fail at least one of the two. Ask for video proof before you pay.
What the genuine watch does
Breguet supplied the Type XX line to the French naval air arm from the 1950s. The Type XXI returned in 2004 as the larger, more complex version. Ref. 3810 runs caliber 584Q, self-winding, with a flyback function. Flyback means one push restarts the chronograph from zero, with no stop and reset step. The dial carries three subdials: running seconds at 9, a 12-hour counter at 6, and a 24-hour indicator at 3. Case width is 42 mm, thickness about 14 mm, water resistance 100 m, sapphire front and back.
What Chinese replicas get right
- Case shape and 42 mm diameter: close on top-grade units.
- Dial layout: three subdials in the correct positions.
- Sapphire crystal and display caseback on mid and top grades.
- Strap choice: calf leather and rubber are both common.
Where replicas fail
- Flyback: most copies use a stock chrono module. Push reset at 2 o'clock while the chrono runs and the hand stops instead of flying back.
- 24-hour subdial: many units tie it to the chronograph hour counter. It then shows elapsed time, not time of day.
- Thickness: a 7750 base adds 1 to 2 mm over the genuine case.
- Dial print: the BREGUET script is thin or uneven on low grades, and the numerals lose their serif shape.
- Caseback engraving: shallow, with wrong font weight on low grades.
- Rotor: no Geneva stripes, wrong engraving depth.
Movements you will see
Three bases cover the market. An Asia 7750 with an added module is the common pick for a working chronograph. A quartz base appears in the cheapest copies and gives a ticking seconds hand at 9. A decorated automatic without a chronograph function shows up in fantasy builds. Ask the seller which base the watch uses. A quartz copy feels lighter in the hand than a 7750 copy.
Checks before you pay
- Video of chrono start, stop, and reset. The hands should snap back to zero.
- Video of the 24-hour hand with the crown pulled. It should set with the time, not with the chrono.
- Photos of the caseback and rotor.
- Case thickness in millimeters, if the seller owns calipers.
- Weight in grams.
Legal note for US buyers
Counterfeit watches are illegal to import and to sell in the United States. U.S. Customs and Border Protection seizes shipments and can destroy them. A personal-use purchase carries seizure risk with no recourse. The trademark holder can also pursue sellers. Treat a listing as a customs risk, not a warranty.
