What a fake Nautilus is

A fake Patek Philippe Nautilus is a counterfeit watch that copies the case, bracelet, dial, and movement of a genuine Nautilus. Patek Philippe did not make it. The most copied references are the 5711/1A, the 5712/1A, the 5811/1G, and the 5990/1A. Sale or import of these watches in the United States is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. 2320 and 19 U.S.C. 1526.

Price signals

The 5711/1A had a US retail price near $30,000 before Patek discontinued it in 2021. Secondary market prices passed $100,000 at the peak. Counterfeit Nautilus watches sell for $400 to $2,000. A Nautilus listed under $10,000 is not genuine. There is no closeout, no liquidation, and no factory overrun for this model.

Movement checks

The 5711/1A uses Patek caliber 26-330 S C. The 5712/1A uses caliber 240 PS IRM C LU, a micro-rotor design that is 2.53mm thick. The 5811/1G uses caliber 26-330 S C. Counterfeits use ETA clones, Miyota movements, or Seiko-based movements with added plates and engraving. Look at the rotor: a genuine 240 caliber rotor sits flush with the bridges. Fake micro-rotors sit above them with visible screws. Genuine caseback engraving is shallow and laser-cut. Fake engraving is deeper and uneven at the edges.

Case, dial, and bracelet

  • The 5711 measures 40mm wide and 8.3mm thick. The 5811 measures 41mm.
  • Blue, olive, and green 5711 dials have a horizontal embossed texture cut into the metal. Low-cost fakes print the pattern on a flat surface.
  • Bracelet links on genuine watches taper in a smooth line and hinge without play. Fakes show uneven gaps and sharp edges at the clasp.
  • Date windows sit at 3 o'clock on the 5711 and 5811. The 5712 has a date subdial and a power reserve indicator at 10 and 11 o'clock.

Customs and penalties

US Customs and Border Protection seizes counterfeit watches at ports of entry and destroys them. A first trafficking offense carries up to 10 years in prison. A second offense carries up to 20 years. Civil statutory damages run up to $200,000 per counterfeit mark, or $2,000,000 if the use is willful. Buyers can lose the watch and the money paid for it.

Verification

Patek Philippe does not run a public serial number lookup. Owners can order an Extract from the Archives from the manufacturer. The Patek Philippe service center in New York authenticates watches and issues paperwork for a fee. A seller who refuses a third-party authentication is a risk signal. Meeting at an authorized dealer or a watchmaker with a caseback opener takes about 15 minutes.

What is not known

Counterfeit production volumes for the Nautilus alone are not published. The OECD and EUIPO list watches among the top product categories by value in global counterfeit trade studies. Exact annual seizure counts for this reference are not broken out by CBP.
